When you go long, you buy a futures contract with the expectation that it will increase in value in the future. Conversely, when you go short, you sell a futures contract and bet on prices to decline in the future.

Through futures contracts, you can profit in both ways as the value of an asset rises or falls. This is different from spot markets, where traders can only profit when the value of an asset increases.
