Calculating Profit and Loss of Perpetual Contracts
Calculating Profit and Loss of Perpetual Contracts

A guide to calculating profit and loss for perpetual contracts.

Updated over a week ago

Calculations of profit and loss are based on the contract's settlement currency. For instance, a USDT-denominated contract will be valued in USDT.

Keep in mind that realized profit and loss are determined by the last price, but unrealized profit and loss are evaluated by the mark price.

Profit and Loss calculations for USDⓈ-margined contracts (ETHUSDT)

Assume you short 10 ETHUSDT perpetual contracts at 1,600 USDT. The price drops and you exit at 1,500 USDT. Your profit will be:

= (Exit Price - Entry Price) * Position Size

= (1,500 - 1,600) * (-10) = 1,000 USDT

Assume you long 25 ETHUSDT perpetual contracts at 1,400 USDT. The price decreases and you exit at 1,300 USDT. Your loss will be:

= (Exit Price - Entry Price) * Position Size

= (1,300 - 1,400) * (25) = -2,500 USDT
